Phillies Weekly 6/24

by JT Volpe - June 24, 2012

Phillies’ record – 34-38, 5th place NL East, 9 games back

Weekly Wrap Up The Phillies went 3-2 this week falling short of the goal of 4 wins, however, a rainout against the Rays on Friday may have held them back from that. The Phillies lost their final game against the Blue Jays, took the first two of three games against the Rockies, and then won the first game against the Rays. The Nationals also went 3-2 this week meaning the Phillies remain a distant 9 games back in the NL East.

Stat of the Week: $5,000

After Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save in 18 attempts, the game was headed into the bottom of the ninth tied at 6 runs apiece. Half-jokingly, Papelbon said to Jim Thome in the dugout that if he hits a walk-off, the closer would give him $5,000. Thome led off the inning as a pinch hitter and sure enough, he took the ball opposite field into the stands! By the time Thome got back to his locker, there was a $5,000 check waiting for him!

Next Week's Schedule:

2 vs. Rays, 4 vs. Pirates, 2 @ Marlins

This Week's Goal: 6 Wins

If the Phillies can go 6-4, or more preferably 7-3, during this 10-game home stand which ends with the 4-game series against the Pirates, they should be able to make up some ground against the Nationals. The Pirates are a team we can sweep, even if it is 4 games. It’s time to make up for the Pirates series the Phillies lost to open the season. The Nationals play all of their games this week on the road. Hopefully, they will finish this week under .500. The Phillies should be able to make up at least one game if not two this week.

Phillies' Current Playoff Probability: 38.75%
